Who carried it first? We don't know. But the object gives you something to work with.
Valextra was founded in Milan in 1937, and the name is a portmanteau — valigia, suitcase, plus extra. A house named for luggage, which by the postwar years was outfitting Italian entrepreneurs and the international jet set, and which won a Compasso d'Oro in 1954 for a briefcase. It has always preferred discreet signatures to a logo: the lacquered edge, the hand-painted line, a particular shade of white.
So picture someone who didn't need the outside of her luggage to explain her. A vanity case is the piece you pack last and carry yourself — never checked, never handed off. Oxblood leather, white stitching, gold zip. Beautiful at close range and quiet from across a platform.

Structured box silhouette with a wraparound zip, single rolled top handle on polished brackets, and gold-tone hardware. Cream leather ovals threaded through the leather in a band around the upper body and at all four base corners. Leather-lined interior with a flat slip pocket. One protective stud to the base.
Complete with its original fitted mirror and detachable adjustable leather strap — wearable as a crossbody, not only a top-handle piece. Vintage vanity cases are very often separated from their mirrors; this one is intact.

Condition — very good
Polished calfskin shows light surface scratching, largely invisible in normal wear. Light rubbing where the piping wraps the lower corners on the bottom. Very small scratch on the bottom. The interior back panel has some scuffing and darkening above the pocket. Logo plate has some scratching. Zip runs smoothly throughout. Leather is supple, structure is firm, corners are sound, and the exterior finish is glossy and unclouded.
Flaws are shot deliberately under raking light. Nothing retouched.
