Celine Small Besace 16 Green Smooth Calfskin Crossbody Bag Silver Hardware

"Besace" is the French word for a satchel worn across the body, the kind that has been slung over shoulders for centuries. Celine's version keeps the saddle-bag shape and strips away everything else: one sculpted flap, one strap of leather running over the top, one silver turn clasp. The Besace 16 belongs to the 16 line, the first bags Hedi Slimane designed for Celine.

With a shape this spare, the color does the talking. This one is celadon, the grey-green of old glazed pottery, so quiet that it shifts with the light: cooler in the morning, softer and warmer by evening. I spent a while getting the camera to see it the way your eye will, and the close-up photos come nearest. Open the flap and the color carries on inside, in leather.
